Governors
Message from the Chair of Governors - Anna Salmi
Dear Windrush Community,
This year marks a historic moment for Windrush Primary School as we start our journeys as two separate schools, Windrush Thamesmead Primary School and Windrush Charlton Primary School. The existing local governing board will continue to serve both schools and will be here to help the schools navigate this new chapter. The main function of the governing board continues to be the same: setting the schools’ ethos, vision, and strategic direction. Governors work as “critical friends” to the headteachers, offering both support and challenge. We hold the headteachers to account for the educational performance of the schools, but also monitor all aspects of school life to make sure the children at both schools can thrive in a happy and safe school setting. While the financial oversight rests at the Trust Board level, the governing board is updated termly on schools’ finances, so we stay informed and aware of the challenges and demands of the schools’ financial situation.
It is important to note that as governors we do not get involved with the day-to-day running of the schools – that is the job of the Headteachers. Your child’s class teacher and the school office can advise you or direct your enquiry to the right person when you have a question concerning your child or any aspect of the day-to-day operations and management of the school.
Over the past two years, my fellow governors and I have had the pleasure of meeting and talking to many of you at various school events, from school fayres to parent education sessions, as well as informally on the playground. During school visits, we also meet with pupils to gather “pupil voice” – to hear directly from them about their learning, how they are kept safe at school, and to hear their thoughts about all aspects of being a pupil at Windrush.
It is often said that “it takes a village to raise a child”. While life in London can seem to set many barriers for feeling the support of “the village”, we hope you are feeling supported and respected as valued members of our school communities. As governors, we are here to make sure our schools are happy and welcoming places where we all work together to nurture our children, foster the love of learning, and ensure high aspirations for all the children of the Windrush family.
Warm regards,
Anna Salmi
